Comments: Very good game for it's era and its genre. got pretty difficult in the later levels, and i heard somewhere it couldnt be completed. not sure how true that is though. not really my genre though so never spent much time playing this game. but its playability still holds up today. id say its only woth playing it on a console as trying this on a keyboard would be hard as hell

Comments: R-Type on the Sega Master System is a simple personification of 8-bit side-scrolling, enemy-blasting, power-up collecting glory. The Graphics are pretty phenominal considering the limitations of the Master System, and the type of game R-Type is. Yes the ol' SMS can hold it's own with this one, throwing as as much onto the screen as it can; with mild flicker and slowdown as a result. Still, the enemies look great and the overall level design is awesome. The Bosses are huge and come with some pretty nifty animations. Your ship is also very well animated and is easily identifiable in the heat of battle. Moral of the story, Kickass! The Music and Sound is great! When it comes to the audio department, most people thiink the SMS is inferior, but that's bullshit. The Music is very close to the arcade version, as are the sound effects. Well. As close as you can get from a T.I. SN76489 chip, but still very reasonable. The Controls are spot on. Ducking and weaving is a breeze, shooting down alien scum is no problem, and the overall responsiveness is key. And the Gameplay... is just as you expect it to be. R-Type. In conclusion, If you haven't played R-Type yet, just do it and stop being a bitch.

Comments: The best game of the genre sure as shooting.It's also very tough from the beginning to the end and the soundtracks are simply catchy.When you get up to the 7th stage,the challenges become next to impossible to overcome as the alien spaceships begin to attack from every direction.Added to that,the two final bosses will make life tough for most players ,not least Bydo.When you use the keyboard to play shooters, it seems the difficulty level increases 10 fold and dodging the enemy fire is certainly a fruitless endeavour. The arcade version of R-Type is much better, though it does not have a secret stage as in the SMS version.It's a good thing that this game had many follow-ups and I doubt the latest one will be The final version as stated.

Comments: Super game. Circle around the screen avoiding those big ball bullets and enemies. With enemy bosses that took up 1/3rd of the screen the graphics were great. Tons of flicker and slow down but the slowdown actually helped you get around those bullets. The original arcade game had Nintendo written on the side, but Sega was the only one to have the home port.

Comments: This is a kickass game to play on the Game Gear with the Master Gear Convertor. Blows the hell out of the awful Game Boy Color R-Type DX. It doesn't have the annoying up and down scrolling the TG-16 version has and it has a hidden level which is hard as hell. Every gamer period should own this.

Comments: This game is fantastic! I got a second hand copy of it real cheap at some market! It's better than the Turbo Graphix 16 and Amiga! And it's got a secret level to go with snazzy music too! This MS version rocks when ya play it on a GENESIS/MEGA DRIVE in glorious stereo sound and a wide screen TV! The best one!

Comments: A really good-looking, solid game. Could have been better if maybe there was a two-player simultaneous mode, or if the stage didn't stop and start over whenever you died...and if I remember correctly, there was no continue feature. I couldn't beat it without the invincibility code. I got pissed at the end, when all the other R-Type thingies came out. I was all like, "Where the heck were you when I was dodging those stupid aliens?!" Fun game, anyways.

Comments: I agree with Firestorm: The SMS had better shoters than this. Is a good translation and all that stuff, but Aerial Assault has some really cool levels and Power Strike had some really catchy tunes and cool levels. This is a good shoter overall, but the SMS has some neat stuff that beats this one in almost every aspect. If you want to get shootie, then grab Aerial Assault or Power Strike....This one is great too, but not the best shooter for the SMS.

If you didnt like this game, what planet did you come from homie!!? in that time, perfect arcade translations were impossible but R-TYPE for the SMS was as good as it got back then. You couldn't have asked for a more perfect traslation than this one besides a little slow down some times when too many enemies would be on the screen at once. I kinda liked the slow downs sometimes because they gave me a way out of danger. if you pay attention, and concentrate, you could use it to your advantage and tap you way out of a tight spot. Anyway,forget what this guy's saying,add this one to your collection!!.

Comments: This would have to be the best side scrolling shooter on this system. Not another game comes close. Bomber Raid is a great shooter, but I'm referring to the side scrollers, not front. Doesn't make much of a difference, but I make one so that I can put both of these games at the front of the pack. This game had some of the best graphics and music on the system as well. Very colorful, too. Not to the point of being vomit-inducing like Fantasy Zone II though. It's an excellent arcade port and worth playing any day.
