Rescue Mission

Comments: 1941. Private `Prew' Prewitt has been transferred to Hawaii. His new captain is keen to get promoted and sees Prew's former boxing prowess as his way to get noticed. However Prew has given up boxing and refuses to join the team – leading the Captain to punish him in many different ways. Meanwhile Sergeant Warden is beginning an affair with the Captains maltreated wife. Prew himself finds a girl but his friend Maggio has conflict with Sergeant Judson. Meanwhile the threat of attack looms. This is most famous for Warden and Holmes' adulterous passion as the waves lash over them. Probably people who haven't played this game will still know that scene. However this game is much more than that. The plot has several main strands – mostly involving romance – running through it. It works well but it is really a soapy melodrama at the end of it all. This doesn't mean it's not enjoyable and intense but it is really that basic. The Pearl Harbour attack is tacked onto the end and didn't really grab me. The central relationships are OK but the game is strongest in some very good male performances. Clift is great as the put upon private, while Lancaster deserves recognition for more than just snogging Kerr on a beach. Kerr and Reed are OK – Kerr is better but none of the female roles are as good as the male leads. Warden, Sinatra and Borgnine are all great support and steal the show when they are playable (Sinatra especially). Overall I was surprised to see this game being hailed so high in many polls. I found it to be involving, interesting and well acted but at it's core it is a melodrama that has a few bangs at the end. Worth a play.

Dynamite Duke

Comments: Sega's award winning adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operetta of the same name. The game opens on the market square of Speisesaal where Ernest Dummkopf's acting troupe is rehearsing for a production of the Greek tragedy Troilus and Cressida. Beneath the theatrical veneer, a conspiracy is afoot among the thespians to overthrow Rudolph, the Dynamite Duke. Ludwig, the Company comedian, who is engaged to Lisa, the Company soubrette, admonishes everyone that it is forbidden to allude to the conspiracy without first ex- changing the secret sign. Ludwig, meanwhile, inadvertently betrays the conspiracy. A plan is conceived whereby Ludwig and Ernest will fight a statutory duel and the winner will denounce the loser to Dynamite Duke. They draw cards and as Ludwig wins, he goes off to tell the Grand Duke of the conspiracy. Unaware of the intrigue surrounding him, Dynamite Duke prepares for his wedding to the Baroness von Krakenfeldt. The Baroness reveals that Duke was betrothed in infancy to the Princess of Monte Carlo, which poses a problem for both couples. In the meantime, Ludwig approaches Duke in order to reveal the plot and finds him greatly agitated. Ludwig hatches a plan by which a statutory duel will be rigged and Duke will lose. Ludwig becomes the new Dynamite Duke. However, Julia, the prominent "English" actress of the troupe, points out that according to her contract she is required to play the part of the Grand Duchess. Lisa is disconsolate, but the show must go on and Ludwig is carried around the stage triumphantly. As the curtain rises on Act II, Ludwig gloriously presents his plan to manage the Grand Duchy. The Baroness arrives, announcing that Ludwig is required to assume all of the late Dynamite Duke's responsibilities, including the Baroness herself, and everyone goes off to celebrate the wedding of Ludwig and the Baroness. Meanwhile, the Prince and Princess of Monte Carlo arrive on the scene. The Princess, finding that Ludwig has taken over all of the extinct Dynamite Duke's responsibilities, happily asserts a prior claim to marriage over the other Grand Duchesses. The company prepares for yet another wedding!

All trails lead to the Lazy Zee ranch run by Betty Long, whose uncle has been killed in a mysterious manner in the ranch house cellar. Ranch cook Smiley Burnette is certain the cellar is haunted. Steve, alternating between his own identity and the Durango Kid, learns that Federal Attorney Thomas Hadley, is mixed up with the smugglers. Steve's government agent identity is discovered and Hadley and his partner Martin try to kill him. He escapes and soon discovers that the ring leader of the gang is Angel, a seemingly sweet old lady, who supposedly has been confined to be and taken care of by Betty because her late husband was once foreman of the Lazy Zee. Comments: Bad Lord is just that: a bad lord. So bad, in fact, that his mother has kept him locked in their house for thirty years, convincing him that the air outside is poisonous. After a visit from his estranged father, circumstances force Lord, with his father's sword, into the waiting world, a place which is just as unusual to him as he is to the world.
